Static Lung Compliance (Cstat)

Respiratory-system compliance from tidal volume and driving pressure.

Static Lung Compliance (Cstat)

Plateau pressure

PEEP (total)
cmH2O
Complete the fields above to see the result.

When to use

  • Tracking respiratory mechanics and lung stiffness in mechanically ventilated patients.

Formula

Cstat = tidal volume / (plateau pressure - total PEEP). Normal is roughly 50-100 mL/cmH2O.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Measure plateau pressure during an end-inspiratory hold with no spontaneous effort.
  • Driving pressure (Pplat - PEEP) above ~15 cmH2O is associated with worse ARDS outcomes.
