When to use

Formula

Sum of 20 weighted variables spanning patient characteristics, admission circumstances, and acute physiology. Hospital mortality = exp(logit) / (1 + exp(logit)), where logit = -32.6659 + ln(SAPS 3 + 20.5958) x 7.3068.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Uses worst values from the hour around admission, unlike APACHE/SAPS II which use the first 24 hours.
  • Regionally customised equations exist; this tool applies the global reference equation.
  • The reason-for-admission item is simplified to a single worst category here.
