Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for Functional Abdominal Bloating/Distension
Recurrent bloating and/or distension occurring, on average, ≥1 day per week
Insufficient criteria for another functional GI disorder that would better explain the bloating/distension
Mild associated abdominal pain or bowel irregularity may still be present.
Criteria fulfilled for the last 3 months with symptom onset ≥6 months before diagnosis

Diagnosis requires bloating/distension ≥1 day/week, insufficient criteria for another functional GI disorder, for the last 3 months with onset ≥6 months before diagnosis.

When to use

  • Evaluating chronic bloating/distension not primarily explained by IBS or another Rome IV disorder.

Formula

Recurrent bloating and/or distension, on average, ≥1 day/week, without meeting criteria for another functional GI disorder that would explain the symptom, for the last 3 months with onset ≥6 months before diagnosis.
