Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for Belching Disorders

Diagnoses an excessive belching disorder from the esophagus or stomach.

Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for Belching Disorders
Belching is bothersome (severe enough to impact usual activities)
Belching occurs more than 3 days a week
Criteria fulfilled for the last 3 months, with symptom onset at least 6 months before diagnosis
ResultCriteria not met

Symptom pattern does not fulfil all required Rome diagnostic criteria for a belching disorder; consider alternative diagnoses or further evaluation.

When to use

  • Diagnosing a clinically significant belching disorder before further work-up to separate gastric from supragastric belching.

Formula

All required: bothersome belching from the esophagus or stomach, occurring more than 3 days/week, for the last 3 months with onset at least 6 months before diagnosis.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Distinguishing excessive supragastric belching (esophageal, behavioral) from excessive gastric belching (physiological) cannot be made from symptoms alone and requires objective intraluminal impedance measurement.
