Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for Belching Disorders
Rome IV Diagnostic Criteria for Belching Disorders
Belching is bothersome (severe enough to impact usual activities)
Belching occurs more than 3 days a week
Criteria fulfilled for the last 3 months, with symptom onset at least 6 months before diagnosis
ResultCriteria not met
Symptom pattern does not fulfil all required Rome diagnostic criteria for a belching disorder; consider alternative diagnoses or further evaluation.
When to use
- Diagnosing a clinically significant belching disorder before further work-up to separate gastric from supragastric belching.
Formula
All required: bothersome belching from the esophagus or stomach, occurring more than 3 days/week, for the last 3 months with onset at least 6 months before diagnosis.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Distinguishing excessive supragastric belching (esophageal, behavioral) from excessive gastric belching (physiological) cannot be made from symptoms alone and requires objective intraluminal impedance measurement.
