Revised Urinary Incontinence Scale (RUIS)
Five-item self-report severity scale for urinary incontinence.
Revised Urinary Incontinence Scale (RUIS)
Urine leakage related to a feeling of urgency
Urine leakage related to physical activity, coughing, or sneezing
Small amounts of urine leakage (drops)
How often do you experience urine leakage?
How much urine do you lose each time?
Result0 points
Consistent with no urinary incontinence (RUIS range 0-16).
- Severity
- no urinary incontinence
When to use
- Quantifying severity of urinary incontinence in adults and monitoring change with treatment over time.
Formula
Sum of 5 items: three 0-3 impact items (urgency-related, stress-related, and drop-only leakage), one 0-4 frequency item, and one 0-3 volume-per-episode item. Total range 0-16.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Combines items drawn from the Urogenital Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6) and the Incontinence Severity Index (ISI).
- The urgency- and stress-related leakage items can suggest which type of incontinence predominates, but the total score alone does not classify type.
