When to use
- Screening patients being considered for, or already on, long-term opioid therapy for chronic non-malignant pain, for risk of developing a diagnosable opioid use disorder (as opposed to generic aberrant drug-related behaviour).
Formula
Unweighted sum of 9 yes/no risk factors (family history of alcohol, illicit drug, and prescription drug misuse; the same three personal-history items; age 16-45; psychological disease; depression), 1 point each if present. Range 0-9; a cut-off of >=3 best discriminated patients who developed OUD from those who did not.
Pearls and pitfalls
- This 9-item unweighted version outperformed the original weighted 10-item Opioid Risk Tool (which also includes a sex-specific childhood sexual abuse item) for predicting a diagnosed opioid use disorder.
