RENAL Nephrometry Score

Anatomic complexity score for a renal mass, based on size, exophytic/endophytic properties, nearness to the collecting system, and polar location.

RENAL Nephrometry Score
R - Radius (maximal tumor diameter)
E - Exophytic/endophytic properties
N - Nearness of tumor to collecting system or sinus
L - Location relative to polar lines
Anterior/posterior descriptor (not scored)
Result4x

Anatomic complexity: low (score 4 of 4-12).

RENAL score
4x
Complexity category
Low

When to use

  • Standardizing description of renal mass anatomic complexity to guide surgical planning (partial vs radical nephrectomy) and predict perioperative risk.

Formula

RENAL score = R + E + N + L (each scored 1-3). Suffix a/p/x denotes whether the tumor is anterior, posterior, or neither. Score 4-6 = low complexity, 7-9 = moderate, 10-12 = high.
