When to use

  • Estimating waitlist mortality and transplant priority in children younger than 12 years.

Formula

PELD = 10 x [0.480*ln(bilirubin) + 1.857*ln(INR) - 0.687*ln(albumin) + 0.436*(age<1) + 0.667*(growth failure)]. Bilirubin and INR floored at 1.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Laboratory values below 1.0 are rounded up to 1.0 before the logarithm, as in the original allocation policy.
