Pediatric Asthma Score (PAS)

Bedside severity score for children 2-18 years hospitalized with an asthma exacerbation.

Pediatric Asthma Score (PAS)
Age

Currently requiring supplemental oxygen
If yes, the oxygenation score is automatically scored as 3, regardless of the measured SpO₂ value entered above.

When to use

  • Serial bedside reassessment of children 2-18 years admitted with an asthma exacerbation, to guide treatment intensity.

Formula

PAS = respiratory rate score (1-3, age-banded) + O2 saturation score (1-3) + auscultation (1-3) + retractions (1-3) + dyspnea (1-3). Range 5-15. Mild 5-7, moderate 8-11, severe 12-15. Any supplemental oxygen requirement is scored as an automatic O2 score of 3.
