Pediatric Asthma Risk Score (PARS)

Predicts risk of asthma at school age in young children.

Pediatric Asthma Risk Score (PARS)
Parental history of asthma
Eczema before age 3 years
Wheezing apart from colds
Wheezing before age 3 years
African-American race
Skin-prick or specific IgE positive to ≥2 aero- and/or food allergens
Result0 points

Low risk of developing asthma by school age.

Risk category
Low risk

When to use

  • A child ≤3 years old, to estimate the probability of asthma developing by age 7 years.

Formula

PARS = parental asthma (2) + eczema before age 3y (2) + wheeze apart from colds (3) + wheeze before age 3y (3) + African-American race (2) + polysensitization to ≥2 aero/food allergens (2). Range 0-14 (scores of 1 and 13 are not attainable given the weighting). Low risk 0-4, moderate risk 5-8, high risk 9-14.
