When to use

  • Screening for mild cognitive impairment and early dementia.

Formula

Sum of seven subdomain scores (max 30) plus 1 point if <=12 years education (only while total <30). Normal >=26.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • More sensitive than the MMSE for mild cognitive impairment; the +1 education point is capped so the total never exceeds 30.
