When to use

  • Estimating mitral valve area in rheumatic mitral stenosis when planimetry is not feasible.

Formula

MVA (cm²) = 220 / pressure half-time (ms).

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Unreliable immediately after balloon valvuloplasty, and in significant aortic regurgitation, atrial septal defect, or abnormal left ventricular or atrial compliance.
  • Planimetry of the mitral orifice in the parasternal short-axis view is the reference echocardiographic method.
