When to use
- Screening for IBS using symptom pattern alone in patients with chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habit.
Formula
Count of 6 symptom criteria, 1 point each. More criteria present increases the likelihood of IBS; no single validated cutoff, but >=3 is commonly used.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Less accurate in men and in older patients than in the original derivation cohort.
