When to use
- Detecting and classifying left ventricular hypertrophy in hypertension, valve disease and cardiomyopathy.
Formula
LV mass (g) = 0.8 × {1.04 × [(LVIDd + PWTd + SWTd)³ − LVIDd³]} + 0.6, with dimensions in cm. RWT = (2 × PWTd) / LVIDd. LVMI = LV mass / BSA.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Upper normal LV mass index is 95 g/m² in women and 115 g/m² in men (ASE/EACVI).
- The linear Devereux formula assumes a symmetrically thickened ventricle and is unreliable in asymmetric hypertrophy — use cardiac MRI or 3D echo in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
