When to use
- Identifying, at admission, patients with acute pancreatitis very likely to follow a non-severe course.
Formula
One point each for rebound tenderness/guarding, elevated creatinine (>=2 mg/dL), or elevated haematocrit (male >43%, female >39.6%). A score of 0 predicts a harmless (non-severe) course.
Pearls and pitfalls
- The value of HAPS is its high specificity/NPV for a mild course, not risk-stratifying severe disease.
- It can be applied within the first hour of admission using bedside exam and basic labs.
