When to use

  • Estimating mortality risk and staging severity in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Formula

Points: Gender (male 1), Age (<=60 = 0, 61-65 = 1, >65 = 2), FVC%pred (>75 = 0, 50-75 = 1, <50 = 2), DLCO%pred (>55 = 0, 36-55 = 1, <=35 = 2, cannot perform = 3). Stage I 0-3, II 4-5, III 6-8.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Higher stage predicts higher 1-, 2-, and 3-year mortality and can inform transplant referral timing.
