When to use

  • First-line screening of older patients with cancer to decide who needs a full comprehensive geriatric assessment before treatment planning.

Formula

Sum of 7 geriatric-assessment items (food intake 0-2, weight loss 0-3, mobility 0-2, neuropsychological status 0-2, BMI 0-3, polypharmacy 0-1, self-rated health 0-2) plus an age item (0-2). Total range 0-17; score <=14 flags the patient for comprehensive geriatric assessment.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Designed to be highly sensitive (favouring over-referral) rather than highly specific, so an abnormal score should prompt assessment, not automatically withhold treatment.
  • Validated in the multicentre ONCODAGE cohort of patients aged 70 and older with a solid or haematological malignancy.
