When to use
- Estimating the likelihood of 90-day functional independence (Glasgow Outcome Scale 4-5) after primary (non-traumatic) intracerebral hemorrhage, to complement mortality-focused scores such as the ICH score.
Formula
FUNC score (0-11) = points for ICH volume (<30 cm³=4, 30-60 cm³=2, >60 cm³=0) + age (<70=2, 70-79=1, ≥80=0) + ICH location (lobar=2, deep=1, infratentorial=0) + GCS (≥9=2, ≤8=0) + absence of pre-ICH cognitive impairment (no=1, yes=0).
Pearls and pitfalls
- Complements, rather than replaces, the ICH score — FUNC predicts functional independence, the ICH score predicts 30-day mortality.
- Developed and validated in a single-center US cohort; recalibration may be needed for other populations.
