When to use
- Estimating 10-year risk of myocardial infarction or coronary death in adults without known cardiovascular disease.
- Historic basis for the NCEP ATP III risk-category point tables.
Formula
Sex-specific points for age, total cholesterol (age-stratified), smoking (age-stratified), HDL, and treated/untreated systolic BP are summed and mapped to 10-year risk of hard CHD via sex-specific tables (Wilson et al, Circulation 1998).
Pearls and pitfalls
- Predicts hard CHD (MI + CHD death) only, not stroke or heart failure, unlike the later 2008 general-CVD Framingham score.
- Was derived in a predominantly white, middle-aged American cohort and may miscalibrate in other populations.
