When to use

  • Serial self-report assessment of symptom burden in palliative and oncology care.

Formula

Sum of nine 0-10 numeric ratings (pain, tiredness, drowsiness, nausea, lack of appetite, shortness of breath, depression, anxiety, wellbeing). Range 0-90.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Track individual symptom trajectories, not only the total; a rise of >=1 point on a symptom is often clinically meaningful.
