Edmonton Obesity Staging System (EOSS)

Clinical staging of obesity-related medical, functional and psychological severity.

Edmonton Obesity Staging System (EOSS)
Highest stage for which the patient meets criteria
ResultStage 0

Reflects overall obesity-related medical, functional and psychological burden, independent of BMI class.

When to use

  • Complementing BMI to characterize the clinical severity of obesity and to help prioritize patients for more intensive treatment.

Formula

Clinician assigns the highest of stages 0-4 for which the patient meets criteria across medical, functional and psychological domains.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Stage, not BMI class, correlates most strongly with mortality and treatment urgency in cohort studies.
  • Re-assess stage over time as it can improve or worsen independent of weight change.
