When to use
- Clinical diagnosis of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when genetic testing is unavailable or pending.
Formula
Sum of the single highest-scoring item within each of 5 groups: family history (0-2), patient history (0-2), physical exam (0-6), LDL-C level (0-8), and DNA mutation (0/8).
Pearls and pitfalls
- Only the highest point value within each category counts, not the sum of all positive items in that category.
- Developed for adults; cholesterol values should be off lipid-lowering therapy or corrected for treatment.
