When to use
- Brief screen for problematic alcohol and drug use in adolescents (typically ages 12-21) during primary care or emergency visits.
Formula
CRAFFT = number of "yes" answers to the 6 items (Car, Relax, Alone, Forget, Friends/Family, Trouble). Range 0-6; score of 2 or more is a positive screen.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Intended to follow a brief pre-screen about any past-year alcohol, drug, or e-cigarette use — CRAFFT is applied to those who endorse any use.
- A later version, CRAFFT 2.1, adds a separate substance-specific frequency prescreen, but the 6-item scored questionnaire is unchanged.
