When to use

  • Predicting a prolonged operation to aid theatre scheduling and case-list planning.

Formula

Sum weighted points for age, sex, indication, BMI, CBD diameter, gallbladder wall, pre-op CT, planned cholangiogram, prior admissions and ASA. Range 0–20; ≤ 3.5 low, 4–8 intermediate, > 8 high probability of > 90-minute surgery.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Designed for elective cases to inform scheduling, not to judge operative difficulty per se.
