When to use

  • Stroke-risk assessment in atrial fibrillation using the 2024 ESC sex-independent score, which drops the female-sex point of CHA₂DS₂-VASc.

Formula

CHF (1) + Hypertension (1) + Age ≥75 (2) + Diabetes (1) + Stroke/TIA (2) + Vascular disease (1) + Age 65–74 (1). Maximum 8 points; sex is not scored.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • The 2024 ESC guideline moved to CHA₂DS₂-VA to simplify decisions and because sex is a risk modifier that changes with age rather than a fixed factor.
