When to use

  • Quantifying overall cardiac pumping capability in patients with suspected or confirmed cardiogenic shock undergoing invasive hemodynamic monitoring.

Formula

CPO (watts) = mean arterial pressure (mmHg) x cardiac output (L/min) / 451.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • In the SHOCK trial registry, CPO was the strongest independent hemodynamic correlate of in-hospital mortality in cardiogenic shock.
