When to use
- Prognosticating survival and need for whole-brain radiotherapy after the first instance of distant brain failure following upfront SRS.
Formula
BMV = (number of new brain metastases since the first SRS) / (time in years since that first SRS). Groups: <4/year low, 4-13/year intermediate, >13/year high.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Developed and validated on patients experiencing distant brain failure after SRS alone (no prior whole-brain radiotherapy).
- Can be recalculated at each successive distant failure to track a patient's trajectory over time.
