When to use
- Estimating 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease risk in adults 40-79 years without known ASCVD to inform statin therapy discussions.
Formula
Sex- and race-specific Cox models using ln(age), ln(total cholesterol), ln(HDL), ln(systolic BP, with a separate coefficient depending on treatment), smoking, and diabetes; risk = 1 - S0(10)^exp(sum of coefficients x values - group mean). Valid for ages 40-79.
Pearls and pitfalls
- Not validated below age 40, above age 79, or in patients with known ASCVD, LDL >=190 mg/dL, or diabetes and age 40-75 already meeting automatic statin criteria.
- Race-specific coefficients derived from US cohorts; consider caution in other populations.
