When to use

  • Interpreting D-dimer in patients over 50 with low/intermediate pretest probability of PE or DVT.

Formula

For age >50: cutoff (ng/mL, FEU) = age x 10. For age <=50: use the standard 500 ng/mL cutoff.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Only valid when pretest probability is low or intermediate (non-high); it does not apply to high-probability patients.
