When to use

  • Estimating 90-day and 1-year mortality in patients with clinically diagnosed alcoholic (alcohol-associated) hepatitis.

Formula

ABIC = (age x 0.1) + (total bilirubin[mg/dL] x 0.08) + (serum creatinine[mg/dL] x 0.3) + (INR x 0.8). <6.71 = low risk, 6.71-9.00 = intermediate risk, >9.00 = high risk.

Pearls and pitfalls

  • Derived and validated in Spanish cohorts of biopsy-proven or clinically diagnosed alcoholic hepatitis.
  • Performed at least as well as MELD, modified Maddrey discriminant function, and Glasgow alcoholic hepatitis score in the original cohort.
